MISSION AND GOALS
Mission: To Promote the Sport of Sailing.

Goals:

1) Races are held in season according to a regular schedule.

2) Sailing and racing training sessions are conducted, both formally and informally.

3) Social events promote member comradery and friendship.

4) Public relations events and activities promote club membership and participation.

5) Financial stability of the club is maintained.

Equipment

In small sailboats such as the ones we sail at JSC, the most important safety equipment is PFDs (lifejackets). The US Coast Guard and Jackson County also require that you carry an efficient sound-producing device for distress signals. You should also have a bailer or two, fresh water, warm dry clothes in a waterproof bag (in case it becomes cooler), and water-resistant sun blocking lotion with a SPF of 30 or higher. In our climate we would recommend using SPF 40, lip-gloss with sun block, good pair of sunglasses and a good hat for sunny days. The sunglasses should be polarized which will cut out the glare on the water. It is useful to have a knife and some basic tools and parts in case you have to cut a fouled line or make some repairs. Your repair kit should contain pliers, screwdriver (s), a roll of duct tape, a spare drain plug, some extra cotter rings/pins, and a short piece of light line. It can be kept in a small ditty bag or waterproof box secured to the boat or inside one of the compartments. It's also a good idea to carry a first aid kit.

Volunteer for the club

This is one of the most important things you can do to help this club. Many of the activities require resources of our club to make your sailing and racing enjoyable.

Our training program is one of the important activities that need your help. Even if you can only do one weekend day or weekday afternoon this will greatly aid our training program. Finding ways of training new sailors is vital to continuing Jacomo Sailing Club. Passing on what we know is the greatest asset we can give to those new to sailing. So if you are willing to give back to the club with your time, use of your boat or both contact Hal Wood now!

We have several new young sailors looking for sailing experience. We need willing skippers to help young sailors learn and experience sailing. If you have time no matter how much or would be willing to take one of these as a crew for a Sunday race, please contact John Sharp.

Promotion/Entertainment activities need help in setting up open sail days, picnics, parties and general get-togethers. Contact the Promotion Committee chair. If you have ideas on promoting the club, entertainment ideas or just want to share your experience of sailing please contact us.

One of the main stays of our racing and on the water programs is the equipment committee. They maintain all club equipment and any help you can provide will help improve our sailing experience. Over the past several years we have made major improvements to our equipment via boats and motors. It is volunteers that make your Sundays enjoyable. If you have ideas on how to improve our equipment or items that you think would better serve our Race Committee let us know.

The backbone of our racing activities is the Race Committee. We have several volunteers who give their time to put on races each Sunday. We also have volunteers for our special event races and fleet regattas. It is an excellent way to learn about sailing by serving on the RC. We welcome any non-sailing member to participate in the RC, contact the Race Committee chair if you would like to help.

JSC needs you to help so we can keep our membership costs in line and affordable. Your contribution through volunteer work in the club is needed now. Every hour you can spend will help JSC provide sailing to all that want it. I do not believe that a few hours a couple times a year is too much to ask of the membership. The benefit to the club and the sailing public is great. Do not shy away form this because of a lack of experience, we can train you in any area where help is needed. So make a little or a lot of time available to those who need your help.

2007 Two of a Kind

Light winds and 100 degree temperatures greeted the 2007 participants for the annual team sailing event. In the first race Todd Pesek, Hal Wood and Bill Johnson broke away from the fleet and crossed the line in that same order. On corrected time Hal wood won the race. The second race saw Todd Pesek open a 5-minute lead only to have the wind fill in from behind. Barry Skikne played the wind well and cross the line first. Once again on corrected time Hal Wood won the race.
