2008 The Annual Banquet is near!

This, our 50th year, plans are in the works for a new format to our annual banquet.

Details include:
Date: November 7th, Friday evening
Location: Hereford House-5001 Town Center Dr.-Leawood, KS

Menu: Hereford House Salad, Carving Station of an Inside Round of Beef, Or Smoked Turkey Breast, Scalloped Potatoes, Seasoned Vegetables, and Vanilla Cheesecake with peach and raspberry coulees.
Open Bar will be available.

Cost: $35.00 per person

Agenda: Honoring our past and future by recognizing past and present members through a video slide show of our earlier fleets, members, and events through the decades. Hopefully, there will be several guest presenters who can tell us about their years with the Club. Club Race and Fleet Race Awards will be held for presentation at a 2009 event but Club Special awards will be presented along with the history and significance of the award.

There will be ample time to meet our guests from our earlier days to hear stories and to share our mutual sailing adventures.

Needed: Pictures, fleet flags and memorabilia from the past years.

Help with addresses of members who have moved away. Just email Connie Blowers or Bernie Kuse with any addresses that you could share. Email either if you have old pictures.
We can talk about how to receive your pictures and how we can get them safely back to you.

2008 JSC Award Nominations

Please forward your nominations for the following awards to Connie Henderson, a board member or email JSC email JSC; Edgar Kennedy Cup, Georgene Weddell Honorees, Port Light Award, Mike McGrath Memorial Award and the Pete Peterson Mariners award. All nominations should be received no later than October 3rd.

The Jacomo Sailing Club has five special awards given for service or performance for this year that require nominations from the club members. The names listed in these awards are the pride of the club. The service they have given and the sailing performance have resulted in their names being engraved on the trophies for all to remember and honor. The recipient's name is engraved on the traveling trophy of that particular award. The award winner retains it for the next year and is given a suitably engraved "keeper" trophy. Presentations are made at the Club Banquet in November.

EDGAR KENNEDY CUP - This is the most coveted award of the Jacomo Sailing Club. Edgar Kennedy, a founding member, donated it, with the stipulation that it be given to the member who best exemplifies the sportsmanship of sailing and who has made the major contribution to the club for the year. A committee of the two Past Commodores and the current Commodore chooses the recipient and by precedent, the current Commodore is not eligible that year. The award is a silver wine cooler.

GEORGENE WEDDELL HONOREES - This award was donated in 1973 by Ray Weddell to honor the female crew who best exemplifies the "spirit of competition and loyalty" to her skipper, as was shown by his late wife and crew member. The recipient is selected by the officers from a list of candidates submitted by the fleets each fleet may submit the name of one nominee along with a brief explanation of why she was selected. The award is a silver punch bowl.

PORT LIGHT AWARD - This award was donated in 1980 by Dan Hertzog to honor the male crew who through his enthusiasm, skill and dependability in all conditions best enables his skipper to sail to full potential. The recipient is selected by the officers from a list of candidates submitted by the fleets. Each fleet may submit the name of one nominee along with a brief explanation of why he was selected. The award is an old ship's port lantern.

MIKE MCGRATH MEMORIAL AWARD HONOREES - This award was donated by friends in memory of Mike. Above all Mike had a great time. We all miss his ready wit and a marvelous smile. This award is given to the person or person who had the most fun sailing. The previous year's winner chooses the award recipient.

PETE PETERSON MARINERS AWARD - The Mariners Award (new in 2005) is given to the person whose enthusiasm, great attitude and participation as a newer club member, best exemplifies the sportsmanship of sailing and spirit of competition. The award is named in honor of Pete Peterson who has actively participated in club racing, sailing and club events during his many years with the Jacomo Sailing Club. Pete has contributed a wealth of sailing knowledge. His contributions are some of our greatest treasures.
The traveling award is a C. Jere's sailboat sculpture mounted on a wood base. The recipient's name is engraved on the trophy. The winner retains it for the next year. The winner is given a suitably engraved "keeper" trophy.
